Aircraft often spend a good portion of their lifetime in hangars. Even aircraft that fly for their owners quite a bit, will usually sit idle for a few days each week. Therefore, many owners will arrange to lease their aircraft to other users during those "off duty" periods. This keeps the airplane exercised and creates an opportunity to offset some of the costs of ownership.
Most leases are a simple agreement between the owner of an aircraft and a potential user in which the user agrees to terms of use, availability, and costs. Depending on the owner of the aircraft, type of aircraft and a few other factors, the lease content will vary but the general concept remains the same.
After the lease has been signed, the user then has the authority to use the airplane as they wish within the terms of the lease agreement.
